Contact Me

I believe in deep work.

We, researchers (or any professionals), produce the most important output from sustained, uninterrupted thinking. I generally adopt the Rhythmic Philosophy: carve out fixed blocks each day for focused work, shut out all distractions during those blocks, then handle communication in designated windows.

Since moving from PhD student to assistant professor, I (unfortunately have to) constantly switch between research, teaching, advising, and service. Protecting focus time has become both more important and more difficult. So I have made some deliberate choices. My primary work computer has no instant messaging apps installed. I do not check email during most of the workday. All communication channels live on a separate device, and I process them in fixed daily windows. Urgent messages are filtered and forwarded to me automatically, so nothing truly time-sensitive gets lost.

Please do not expect an immediate reply. I typically respond to emails within one business day.

How to reach me

  • Academic collaboration or formal matters. Email: [email protected]. This is the most reliable channel.
  • Students I advise. Please use Discord for all work-related messages. Avoid using WeChat for academic discussions. Discord keeps conversations organized by project and makes them searchable for the rest of the group. For non-urgent questions, bring them to our scheduled meetings. For genuine emergencies, call me.
  • WeChat. I understand that WeChat is sometimes unavoidable. I do use it, but I check it less frequently. Short messages I may reply to quickly on my phone. Anything that requires a longer response will wait until I am at my communication device.

Why this setup

This setup is not about creating distance. It is about making sure that when I do reply, you get a considered response, not a few words rushed out between two other things.
